Local information

Rutgers:

Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, has four campuses in central New Jersey. The 2002 Annual Meeting of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society will be held on the College Avenue Campus in New Brunswick, mainly in the Rutgers Student Center and in Brower Commons, which are located directly across from one another on College Avenue. Accommodations will be in two dormitories on the College Avenue Campus, Stonier and Hardenbergh Halls. Stonier is located next to Brower Commons, and Hardenbergh is a short walk away. A good set of campus maps is available on the Rutgers web site (http://www.kiosk.rutgers.edu/Topology/NewBrunswick.html).

The College Avenue Campus includes two notable attractions for visitors: The Geology Museum (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~geolweb/museum.html) and the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum (http://www.zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu/). The Rutgers Student Center contains several restaurants, including a fast food court, an Au Bon Pain franchise, and the Red Lion Café. The Zimmerli Art Museum also has a café. The Alexander Library, located a short walk up College Avenue from the meeting site, has computer terminals where you can access the web. The College Avenue Gym, located next door to the Rutgers Student Center, includes swimming pools, exercise equipment, a climbing wall, and tracks, and can be used, for a $5 daily fee, by people attending the conference. If you think that you will want to use the gym during the conference, be sure to check off the appropriate box on the registration form so that we can give them your name.

New Brunswick:

The entire College Avenue Campus is within easy walking distance of the New Brunswick train station and of New Brunswick's restaurants, bars, shopping, and theaters. Restaurants are located mainly on Easton Avenue between Hamilton and French Streets and, slightly farther from the meeting site, on Albany and George Streets. For more detailed information about New Brunswick, please consult the New Brunswick web site (http://www.newbrunswick.com).

New Brunswick is well located for those who would like to combine a trip to the HBES meeting with a visit to other attractions in the region. By train, New Brunswick is less than an hour from New York City and Philadelphia and less than half an hour from Princeton.

Click for New Brunswick, New Jersey Forecast The weather in June in central New Jersey is usually very pleasant. The average temperature for the month is 70° (21 Celsius), with an average high of 80° (27) and an average low of 58° (14). Of course, you should come prepared for the possibility of a heat wave, cold snap, or rainy spell. The dormitories and meeting facilities are all air conditioned.

Transportation

By car:

    1. From the New Jersey Turnpike (Interstate 95): Take Exit 9. Get on Route 18 North. Go through the light at Paulus Boulevard and DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST GEORGE STREET EXIT, which will take you to the wrong Rutgers campus. Stay on Route 18 through the light at Commercial Avenue and exit at George Street. Turn left onto George Street, and then right on Seminary Place. Drive one block on Seminary Place and then turn right at College Avenue. The Rutgers Student Center will be a short distance up on the left, with Brower Commons directly across the street from it. You will need to find a metered parking spot on College Avenue or on a side street until you register and obtain a temporary Rutgers parking pass.
    2. From Interstate 287: Take the Easton Avenue (route 527) exit. Follow Easton Avenue for several miles until you reach New Brunswick. Turn left at Hamilton Street and then left again at College Avenue. The Rutgers Student Center will be a short distance up on the left, with Brower Commons directly across the street from it. You will need to find a metered parking spot on College Avenue or on a side street until you register and obtain a temporary Rutgers parking pass.

If you need to know how to get the meeting by car using another route, please either consult an online service such as Mapquest or Yahoo or call for directions (732-932-2642).

By plane:

Newark International Airport [http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM] is the best one to use for this meeting. If you decide to use JFK or LaGuardia, please consult their web sites for information about transportation to and from central New Jersey.

To get from Newark International Airport to New Brunswick, we recommend that you use the airport train station recently opened on the line that connects New Brunswick with New York City. To use it, take the airport monorail to the train station. The standard one-way fare from the airport station to New Brunswick is $5.25 on New Jersey Transit, and the trip is scheduled to take about half an hour. After you arrive at the New Brunswick train station, follow the directions below under "By train" to get to the meeting location.

There is also a shuttle from the airport, called the Airporter, that can take you to the Hilton in East Brunswick. The fare is $20 and the trip takes about half an hour. You will have to get a taxi from the Hilton to campus. Please visit the shuttle company’s web site (http://www.goairporter.com) or call them (800-385-4000) for current information. Of course you can also take a taxi from the airport. The fare should be about $43, not including a tip. Please check the airport web site (http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/ewrframe.HTM) for more information about ground transportation options.

By train:

New Brunswick is served by both New Jersey Transit and Amtrak. [ http://www.njtransit.com, http://www.amtrak.com ]. From the train station, you can either take a taxi or walk to the meeting site. It is slightly over half a mile (about one kilometer), partly uphill, from the station to the Rutgers Student Center and Brower Commons. When you leave the station, you will find yourself either on George Street or Easton Avenue, depending on whether you exit the station at the front or the rear of the train. Both George Street and Easton Avenue run perpendicular to the train tracks. There is a taxicab office on Easton Avenue, and there are free Rutgers buses to campus that can be caught on George Street (which unfortunately don't run very frequently in the summer). To walk, you need to walk northwest and slightly up hill on either George Street or Easton Avenue to reach the College Avenue Campus. If you are going up Easton Avenue, turn right on Somerset and then left on College Avenue. If you are going up George Street, turn left on either Somerset or Hamilton Street and then right on College Avenue. Follow College Avenue for less than half a mile. The Rutgers Student Center will be on your left and Brower Commons will be on your right. Signs will lead you to the meeting and housing registration desks.
